These three National Parks contain some of the richest and most varied of the world’s remaining rainforests and are large enough to preserve the integrity of their ecosystems and catchments. Besides, the forest also homes to rare animals such as orangutans, rhinos, elephants, tigers, etc.

The Best of Destinations

Medan is the largest city in North Sumatra. It is becoming your entry point before starting your journey to the Jungles. Some of the tourist attractions that you can visit in this city are Maimun Palace, the grand mosque of Al-Ashum, and Vihara Gunung Timur temple.

Tangkahan is one of the gateways to access Gunung Leuser National Park. It started as an ecotourism spot in 2001. The area used to be logged and hunting animals spot for poachers. The local people have transformed the region, trying to stop the forest’s illegal exploitation and forming forest ranger groups to patrol for any unlawful activities. Seven elephants were brought to the area to support this initiative. You will be allowed to join with the elephants for their daily bathing in the river accompanied by the mahout-the keeper. Moreover, you will explore Gunung Leuser National Park’s parts to search the Sumatra wildlife inside the jungle.

Bukit Lawang is another entrance gate to Gunung Leuser National Park. It is the most accessible place to encounter orangutans—more than 5000 orangutans living in this area. Together with the guide, you will go deeper into the legendary Sumatra jungle. It is a significant opportunity for you to see gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, longtail and pigtail macaques, flying squirrels, Sumatra peacocks, and hornbills. Even wild and semi-wild orangutans might cross your way.

Berastagi is a relaxed and picturesque hill town with distant views of two active volcanoes; Sinabung (2417m) and Sibayak (2172m). It is also the homeland of the ‘Batak Karo,’ one of the six Batak tribes that inhabit the province of North Sumatra.

Lake Toba, formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption some 70,000 years ago, is probably the largest resurgent caldera on Earth. The extraordinary natural wonder at 1,145 square km and depth about 450 meters. Enjoy the fabulous scenery while you visit this place.
