In the morning you will visit the most important highlights of the port city of Medan: the Maimum Palace, the Mesjid Raya mosque and the Chinese temple “Vihara Gunung Timur”. Then it goes on a four-hour drive through the beautiful nature of North Sumatra towards Tangkahan in the Gunung Leuser National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Tangkahan was previously known for illegal logging and hunting. Park rangers have been patrolling this area with elephants since 2001 to protect the jungle, which you will explore on a two-hour hike after your arrival.

After breakfast you can wash and bathe the elephants of the park rangers together with the mahout (elephant handler) in the nearby river. Afterwards, a jeep takes about 3 hours towards Bukit Lawang, on the other side of the national park, which is known for its orangutan rehabilitation programs. After arriving in Bukit Lawang, you can spend the afternoon relaxing in your lodge or walking around the small town of Bukit Lawang

Your adventure in the jungle begins today. On a 6-hour hike you will discover the flora and fauna of the Gunung Leuser National Park and observe orangutans, gibbon monkeys, Thomas Leaf monkeys, longtail and pigtail macaques, flying squirrels, Sumatra peacocks and hornbills in their natural environment. Later, you and your guide will look for a suitable spot on the river, where you will set up camp for the night with simple tents. A delicious home-cooked dinner awaits you here

After breakfast at your camp, continue on a 4-hour hike through the jungle. Your jungle trek ends at a river, on which you will cruise back to your hotel in around 20 minutes on a tire. In the afternoon you can relax in your lodge or cool off in the river.

Today your journey continues to Berastagi in the Karo highlands through the breathtaking nature of Sumatra with a view of the two volcanoes Sibayak and Sinabung. On the way you will visit the Mary Annai Church and Lumbini Park, where the Buddhist Shwedagon Pagoda from Myanmar was recreated. Before heading to the hotel in Berastagi, you can buy fresh exotic fruits at one of the many local fruit markets.

The climb to the Sibayak volcano (2172m) is relatively easy and only takes about an hour. On the way back you can relax your muscles in the hot springs of Raja Berneh before continuing to Dokan, a traditional Batak Karo village with traditional Batak houses. After a detour to the Sipiso Piso waterfall, you will finally reach the island of Samosir in Parapat in 45 minutes by ferry in the middle of the Danau Toba Lake, the largest crater lake on earth.

Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast the whole day is at your disposal. Relax in the hotel, spend the day at the lake for a swim or take a bike tour around Tuk Tuk.

Today you will explore Samosir Island with your private driver. Your first stop is Ambarita, the main Batak Toba village on Samosir, where the highest court was held on stone chairs and tables. Afterwards you visit the former house of King Sidauruk in Simanindo village and can attend a performance of the traditional gate-gate dance. Then continue north to the hot sulfur springs in Panguruan and on the way back to the ancient tomb of King Sidabutar.

After breakfast, your driver will take you to Medan Airport for your flight to Padang. The drive from Lake Toba to the airport in Medan takes around 4 hours. When you arrive in Padang, your driver will take you to your hotel in Bukittinggi, where you will have the afternoon at leisure.

In the morning your driver takes you to the Harau valley. Explore the valley on a 2-hour hike. With a bit of luck you can see black Siamang and Gibbon monkeys here. The hike ends at a waterfall for a relaxing swim. Afterwards, a family invites you to a small Padang cooking class in their house before returning to the hotel in Bukittinggi.

A bike tour starts in the village of Koto Baru today and you explore the surrounding villages and rice fields at the foot of the Marapi volcano with your guide. From here you have a wonderful view over Bukittinggi. With several stops in small villages you will learn more about traditional blacksmithing and rice cultivation in Sumatra and with a small coffee stop you can get to know the villagers. Return to your hotel in Bukittinggi in the afternoon.

Today we go to Sianok Canyon, a 150 meter deep canyon on the edge of Bukittinggi. You walk through small forests and bushes to “Koto Gadang”, a village known for its traditional silversmiths. Here you can look over the shoulder of the blacksmiths before you continue with your driver to Lake Maninjau. On the way to Lake Maninjau, enjoy the beautiful view on one of the winding roads in Sumatra.
